Hunger & Food Security in India
India Hunger A 148.jpg
Binda from the ostracized low caste Nut community of Mangrepur works collecting mustard by the Hunda system. Hunda is a system whereby laborers provide a fixed proportion of the crop they cultivate to the landowner on whose land they work. Binda also provides for her three children by collecting wood from the forest. She is BPL (Below Poverty Line) but the Yadav (higher-caste) Pradhan (village head) has not provided her a PDS (Public Distribution System) card by which to claim her subsidized ration. ..Ostracized, largely illiterate, ignored by an indifferent administration, without land adequate to support their families' needs, the Nut community of Mangrepur village regularly suffer from hunger. ..Photo: Tom Pietrasik.Mangrepur, Marajganj District, Uttar Pradesh.
