Despite 20 years of economic growth, endemic hunger continues to afflict a large proportion of the Indian population. Per-capita consumption of food-grains has decreased since 1996. The percentage of underweight children in India remained stagnant between 1998 and 2006. And for 25 years, the calorie consumption of the poorest half of the population has consistently declined.
