The Namahal Vidayalaya Government Tamil Mixed School serves the community living in the Navalady Tsunami Resettlement village in Batticaloa. All children attending the school were affected both by the tsunami and the conflict between the SLA (Sri Lankan Army) and the LTTE. The school has 434 students in Grades 1-11. UNICEF funded construction of the new school building, opened in June 2008 and provides teacher training in Child Friendly Schooling. UNICEF have also helped in the drawing up of a School Development Plan.

The old school building was situated close to the coastline and was completely destroyed in the tsunami. A total of 119 students lost their lives. UNICEF supplied three Temporary Learning Spaces during the transition period before completion of the new school building. The new building boasts bright, well ventilated learning spaces and an auditorium. There are some concerns over sourcing materials for repairs to worn fixtures and fittings, for example the doors which are made of metal rather than locally available wood.
