Women undertaking routine maintenance of the Lakhya village water pump. This pump was provided by the Government of West Bengal and is based on a design by UNICEF called TARA. The community is responsible for the monitoring of water quality and maintenance of the pump. The pump has a committee who fund quality control and maintenance by levying a charge of INR1 per month for each household that uses the pump. UNICEF through its partners the Ramakrishn Mission has provided training for local women so that they can undertake minor maintenance repairs to the pump and has also provided them the tools for this maintenance. The Ramakrishna Mission has provided TARA pump maintenance training for 143 groups in Purbamedinipur district.
