Pictures illustrate the use of an ecosan toilet built by Unicef partners BLESS in an anganwadi centre in Cuddalore...Ecosan toilets are based on a model designed by Unicef. The ecosan toilet does not use water for flushing. Instead, two handfuls of ash, sand or wood cuttings are scattered after use. The ecosan toilet uses separate holes fo defacation, urine and cleaning water. When the waste pit is full, it is sealed for 2-3 months, the waste material is then safe to use as manure. The ecosan toilet saves water and can be used at all times even during rainy seasons and in coastal and flood-prone areas where water table is high. Because water is not used, there is no risk of contaminating ground water through leeching...Unicef trained local NGO partner BLESS staf in sanitation and hygene and these messages passed on to tsunami communities. In Cuddalore district BLESS have constructed a number of ecosan toilets including 200 private household, two public community and two in schools. ..Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, India.November 28th 2008..THIS PHOTOGRAPH IS THE COPYRIGHT OF TOM PIETRASIK.
