Girl residents bathe at Mahila Sikshan Kendra...Mahila Sikshan Kendra is a residential school run by UNICEF partners Mahila Samakhya. Mahila Sikshan Kendra provides an education for girls who would otherwise not be at school. Many of these young women were required to work by parent's who could not afford to forfeit their wages by sending their children to school. Some of the young women were working as migrant labour in industries like brick kilns. Mahila Samakhya has identified vulnerable young women and placed them in the Mahila Sikshan Kendra education system which aims to place all those it teaches in mainstream government schools after a period of one year. At Mahila Sikshan Kendra, Mahila Samakhya promotes hygiene and sanitation among the residents. Mahila Sikshan Kendra has also established Child Cabinets. These cabinets, consisting of a dozen students, aim to encourage student involvement in the maintenance and the cleaning of the residential school's water and sanitation facilities. The cabinet promote personal hygiene and encourage child to child and child to parent interaction on hygiene. The Children's Cabinet was an idea first promoted by UNICEF. Mahila Samakhya is UNICEF's partner in eleven districts in Jharkhand. Mahila Samakhya work with Adivasi (tribal) communities in Ranchi district, encouraging good hygiene practices including handwashing and providing practical support for the construction of latrines in an area where two thirds of the population defecate in the open.
