Women and children from Podumkhana village collect water from a TARA pump. This pump was provided by UNICEF. The community is responsible for the monitoring of water quality and maintenance of the pump. The pump has a committee who fund quality control and maintenance by levying a charge of INR1 per month for each household that uses the pump. UNICEF through its partners the Ramakrishn Mission has provided training for local women so that they can undertake minor maintenance repairs to the pump and has also provided them the tools for this maintenance. The Ramakrishna Mission has provided TARA pump maintenance training for 143 groups in Purbamedinipur district. Using the local media, UNICEF have also undertaken awareness drives in this area to encourage the community to make use of water pumps and latrines.
