This important work, consistent with the Uttar Pradesh government's sanitation project is undertaken as part of the NREGA (National Rural Employment Guarantee Act), an Indian Central government initiative that provides one-hundered days work every year to all rural households...UNICEF and the Uttar Pradesh Government, have identified 36 model Gram Panchayats (local-level village administration) in Mirzapur District. The promotion of good sanitation and hygiene practices in these Gram Panchayats allows them to serve as examples for the remaining areas of the district to emulate. The promotion of hygiene and sanitation includes the construction and painting of school toilet blocks, the construction of individual toilets in households, the digging of garbage pits, recycling waste water and encouraging personal hygiene awareness. ..Only 32 percent of those living in Uttar Pradesh, India's largest state, have access to a toilet. Uttar Pradesh faces many challenges in it's efforts to address this deficiency. UNICEF supports the Uttar Pradesh government's sanitation and hygiene project at both the state and district levels. UNICEF is working to increase the capacity of all of those involved in the sanitation and hygiene project from state-level administrators through to Panchayati Raj (local-level administration) officers and influential individuals, including teachers, who live among rural communities. UNICEF has prioritised the need to communicate the importance of good sanitation and hygiene practice to these communities. The Uttar Pradesh government and UNICEF have focussed their campaign on eight districts (including Mirzapur) with the intention that these serve as models for the remaining 62 districts of the state.
