While an important safety net for hungry people, India's Public Distribution System (PDS) needs to be extended if it is to properly satisfy the calorific needs of vulnerable rural communities. According to Dr Jogesh Jain of the local JSS (Jan Swasthya Sahyog or People's Health Support Group), despite the PDS, 46% of children are sleeping hungry every night in rural Chhattisgargh.
