At Periyakuppam village primary school, in tsunami-affected Cuddalore district, all 1-4 Grade students (87 pupils) are completing the ABL curriculum. Almost all of these students are tsunami-affected and from poor fishing families. With the assistance of Unicef and the Tamil Nadu Government, the school has been pursuing ABL since 2005 and is one of the model schools for the government's wider implementation of the program. Unicef has supplied the school teaching advice, tables, and learning equipment including the activity cards that are the basis of ABL learning. ..ABL (Activivity Based Learning) was first implemented in Chennai City government schools. Such was the success of the program that Unicef developed the model and worked with the Tamil Nadu government to introduce it to all 330 schools in the three tsunami affected districts of Cuddalore, Nagappatinam and Kanyakumari. On the basis of the tsunami-schools' experience, the Government of Tamil Nadu has now applied the scheme for all 1-5 Grade students in all government schools in the state. ABL encourages children to learn at their own pace, individually or in small groups. It dispenses with the idea of the class teacher standing at the blackboard with all pupils looking forward. Children are inspired to consider learning a creative and enjoyable experience. Using a series of task-cards, students are taught to take responsibility for their own achievements and to pursue their studies at a steady pace. The class teacher is on hand for any assistance required by pupils. Unicef has provided learning materials, tables and advice to the Tamil Nadu government.
