Samakhiyali education committee member Mulubhai, age 53, with children in front of their new school. The dalit community of Piparavandh village used to live 15km away. The 2001 earthquake led to a dispute with their high-caste then-neighbours and Piparavandh's 50 families moved to a plot of vacant land. One of the many challenges in establishing their new community was providing an education for their children. With the help of the UNDP-supported Mahiti-Mitra centre in Samakhiyali members of the village education committee were able to petition the government to provide them a school. Two years ago the school was built and now has two staff members teaching grades 1 to 4.
