Munni cleans cooking utensils beside a drain close to her home in Horijon Polli.
Munni Basfur, her husband and four children live in one room. They currently have to use a dilapidated block shared with the whole slum. She says of the new latrines and shower block being built near her house: “It’s a bit difficult living here, with all my family living in one room. But now we’re getting a new toilet block. Maybe life will be better.” Munni works incredibly hard to make ends meet. She works as a cleaner at a pharmaceutical company, and does a second shift at a local governement office. She earns 2000tk (£16.40) a month. She says she dreams of having job security: “I call my job a ‘One/Two’ job. One: today I have it. Two: tomorrow I don’t.”
Munni lives in Horijon Polli, a slum in which all residents are from the low-caste Hindu sweeper community. The community are ostracised from wider society and there are very few employment opportunities for them beyond cleaning. Oxfam are building a latrine block in Horijon Polli and are working with partners NGO Forum to support residents.
