Mahila Samakhya is UNICEF's partner in eleven districts in Jharkhand. Mahila Samakhya work with Adivasi (tribal) communities in Ranchi district, encouraging good hygiene practices including handwashing and providing practical support for the construction of latrines in an area where two thirds of the population defecate in the open. Mahila Samkhya work with women's self help groups to encourage good waste water management and provide advise on wormi composting. Mahila Samakhya also work in schools and child residential centres, promoting hygiene and sanitation through staff training and the distribution of learning materials. UNICEF are advisors and technical assistants to the Jharkhand government in the implementation of the government's Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC).
